Situation

Your question

Give the interviewer just enough context to understand where you were and what was happening. Don't over-explain — you'll lose them before you even get to what you did.

What to include
Where you were working (role/company/team), when it happened (timeframe), and what the specific challenge or context was. Aim for 2–3 sentences. Skip anything the interviewer doesn't need to understand your actions.
Example

"During my junior year internship at a regional marketing firm, we were two weeks from a client campaign launch when our lead designer left unexpectedly. Our team of three had to absorb the remaining deliverables without extending the deadline."

Your question

What were YOU specifically responsible for in this situation? The Task step clarifies your role — it separates what the team faced from what you personally owned.

Common mistake to avoid
Don't describe what you did yet — that comes in Action. Task is just your assignment or responsibility: "My job was to…" or "I was responsible for…" One or two sentences is enough.

"My task was to step in as the point person for client communication and coordinate the redesign of the two remaining landing pages, while our project manager handled the timeline renegotiation."

Your question

This is the most important part of your answer. Walk the interviewer through exactly what you did — step by step. They're hiring YOU, not your team.

The most common STAR mistake
Using "we" instead of "I." Even in team situations, describe your individual contribution: "I reached out to the client directly," not "We decided to reach out." Be specific about the choices you made and why.
Example

"I immediately scheduled a call with the client to set expectations and reassure them that the quality wouldn't drop. Then I audited the remaining design files, identified which components I could complete myself using Canva and the brand kit, and flagged two elements that needed a contractor. I sourced a freelancer through Upwork, briefed them in under an hour using a spec sheet I built, and checked in daily to keep us on schedule."

Your question

What happened because of your actions? A strong Result shows the impact — not just that things worked out, but how well and what you (or others) learned from it.

Make it land
Numbers, whenever possible: percentages, dollar amounts, time saved, scores, ratings. If you don't have metrics, describe a qualitative shift: "The client extended the contract," "My manager highlighted this in my review," or "I now lead this process for the whole team."
Example

"We launched on time, and the client gave the campaign a 9/10 satisfaction rating — their highest of the year. My manager cited this project in my performance review as evidence of initiative under pressure, and I was offered a full-time role at the end of the internship."
